Small wars are soon forgotten and the players within these wars rarely get a mention, so I'm an avid consumer of any material I can find on these subjects. Looking for more background on units within South African army was what lead me to this book. Unfortunately I found it to be more of a study in anthropology and sociology than military history.That said it is a very comprehensive study of the establishment of 31 battalion, the bushmen who served within it and their families . Unfortunately this level of detail does not extend to the war itself and the details of the battalion's deployments are presented merely as vignettes . Well written, very thoroughly researched, just not what I was looking for.
Hint: I bought this book in a bookshop in South Africa; therefore, this is not a verified purchase.1. Approach and structure: looking at the table of contents, the author apparently tried to establish some chronological order but the book is incomprehensive and inconsistent.First, and in contrast to its title, about 90 percent of the book focuses on 31/201 BN and touches 36/203 BN only marginally, with the reason for renaming (establishment of the SWATF and the subsequent reorganization of the theater of war) not given anyway.Secondly, letters, emails, personal and official notes and excerpts from other books by soldiers and civilians (e.g. anthropologists, relatives) containing anecdotes, suggestions, rumors etc. with little to no relevance drive the book. These apparently important events in the history of 31 BN are e.g. the sudden lack of water during a baptism, some account by a national serviceman during his highschool exchange in the US and the sighting of a leopard near the camp. The author often repeats himself as well as the information cleaned from the aforementioned sources within one or two pages. Spelling mistakes and misidentified equipment further compound reading one of the few books about this interesting subject.In contrast to that, information on Bushmen culture as well as recruitment, selection, training and equipment are generally spread throughout the book. Tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs) as well as standard operation procedures (SOPs) employed by the battalion in their daily patrols, skirmishes and ambushes are only covered marginally. Similarly, their role in major operations such as Operation Moduler, Hooper and Packer are discussed marginally. The book misses organigrams of either battalion as well as maps of operations, the camps of both battalions and the theatre of war. Both organigrams and maps would have greatly improved understanding of structures and operations.2. I expected a book thoroughly covering the history of both Bushmen battalions, including their recruitment, training and equipment, structure and operations. Therefore, this book has been far below my expectations. With information on 31 and 36 BN thinly spread overall, the interested person is forced to buy it. The book itself, combined with all the information provided in it, however, provides a good starting point for further research and a- finally – a comprehensive book covering the history of the Bushmen soldiers.
