The Micky Knights series is fabulous! I purchased books 5 & 6 first a couple of years ago and left them on my bookshelf without reading them. I had many books ahead of them to read first. Even though I am a voracious reader, it took awhile for me to read "The Death of a Dying Man". I became entranced immediately with Micky Knight and her supporting cast of characters. It is rare for me to make a connection with characters in the hundreds of books I have read, yet when I do, I have a special bookcase for these books. The Micky Knights series will take its place among a few other wonderful books on my special bookcase. After reading book 5 and 6, I ordered 1 thru 4 and 7 &8 immediately. There are many circumstances that I can personally relate to with Micky Knight's character. Micky is dealt a rough hand in the poker of life. For twenty years she has just survived without really living. Her character is brave, dedicated and honest but she has a battered self esteem. She cannot believe that she is worthy of another woman's love, especially, if that other woman is a wealthy professional. Micky is a PI and I am impressed with how she breaks down the clues in every case. I do have to ask one question though -- does Micky have a death wish? I mean through many of the very dangerous cases in this series, she is almost killed every time. I have to question -- why Micky is such a dope?! In almost every case she goes to confront the "bad guy(s)" without any protection or back-up! That makes me want to scream and pull my hair (let's be honest -- I would rather have another feel good motive to pull my hair) than disappointment or incredulity of how incredibly stupid Micky is time and time again when she confronts the "evil" people!Another exasperation with Micky is that she's a stubborn po-boy lover! She has the love of her life, Cordelia, on a emotional seesaw! I don't know if Cordelia has the patience of a saint or she is just clueless. There is something that bothers me though about the relationship between Micky and Cordelia. I noticed reading the series that there are no loving words between these two characters. Never a term of endearment between them. No Love, honey, darling, etc. Why? Regardless, of these contradictions, I have always been particular about a story that has a female, cop, lawyer or PI. I love reading how she matches her intellect and wit with her male counterparts. How she is brave, dedicated and honest. How she swoops down on her nemesis and saves the damsel in distress or saves the day. Also, the hot love scenes the author has created between these beautiful women in this series are great and enjoyable because they communicate another dimension of solidarity between the characters. I look forward to more of Micky Knight, et al.

Book Info: Genre: Detective/Lesbian Noir Reading Level: AdultDisclosure: I received a free copy of book 7 in this series in exchange for an honest review. I purchased the rest of the books in the series myself, so am under no particular obligation, but am happy to provide an honest review.Synopsis: New Orleans PI Micky Knight just had to get into a butch pissing contest with the journalist partner of a famous doctor working with her lover, Cordelia James. Micky's insistence that the skills of a reporter are of no use to a PI backfires, and now she's stuck with a drop-dead gorgeous assistant and the case of a dying gay man looking for a child he might have fathered. These chains of events-and an act of nature-will tear Micky's life apart in ways that may never be put back together. My Thoughts: This book takes place in 2005, and over 6 years after the events of the previous book. It focuses heavily on destruction and desperation: the destruction caused by Katrina, the destruction caused by trust betrayed, the desperation of people who are over their heads and trying to hold on. It is very much how I define noir - dark, difficult, and beautifully written.Again, Micky's friends are in the background, if they're witnessed at all. Focus is placed more upon Lauren and Shannon and their interactions with Micky and Cordelia. With just two books left to read in this series, I'm hoping the focus will come back to Micky's friends and their interactions and way of working together, but I guess we'll see what happens. At any event, I enjoyed the book a great deal and if you enjoy romantic suspense and are not bothered by lesbian protagonists, then you should enjoy it too.

Fans of the Micky Knight series had to wait a long time for this installment. The fact that Redmann lives in New Orleans played a big a part in that and the fact that Hurricane Katrina becomes a character in this book.Damon LaChance is a well-known figure in the New Orleans gay community, famous for his decadence and the bars he owns in the French Quarter. Seven years before he slept with a woman for the first and last time, so, when she told him she was pregnant, he rejected her. It couldn't be his child, could it? Now Damon is dying and he's having doubts. He wants Micky to find the child and determine if she is his daughter. He wants someone to leave his property to, but more importantly, he wants to feel a connection to the future he won't have. When someone murders Damon, Micky becomes more determined to find the child that someone is trying to disinherit. Her task and her life are complicated by Dr. Lauren Calder and her lover Shannon Wild. Dr. Calder is working on a project with Micky's lover Dr. Cordelia James and taking up way too much of Cordelia's time. Shannon is a journalist who decides that working with Micky to solve the LaChance case would be a great way to get experience and to hit on Micky. Micky's professional work is distracted by Shannon's presence and her personal life begins to deteriorate as she suspects something may be going on between Lauren and Cordelia. As Hurricane Kartina roars into the Gulf Coast Micky's emotions are torn in multiple directions and she is forced to face the possibility that not only will she lose the city she loves, but the relationship her whole life is based upon.Redmann is a Lambda Literary Award winner and shows her experience in this book. The various subplots weave together like threads to form the pattern of the whole cloth. Just enough about the plot is revealed to keep the reader going, but not enough to keep surprises from popping up. Micky's emotions are tightly wrapped and on the verge of flying apart as she vacillates between confidence and doubt. The dramatic tension created by the search for the child, and by extension the murderer, is counter balanced by the tension between Micky and Cordelia.Looming over everything is the growing presence of the storm as it approaches. Redmann captures the inattention of the residents as Katrina is just a story on the news and then the growing awareness of the danger they face as landfall becomes imminent. The terror of the flight from the city, the sense of powerlessness to help those left behind and the devastation caused to New Orleans pours from the pages. Characters who haven't acted nobly earlier in the book emerge as heroes and others show their true natures. The spell that Jean Redmann weaves draws the reader into and through the book. There is a totally unexpected twist in the relationship between Micky and Cordelia that begs for the rapid appearance of the next book in the series. Death of a Dying Man has a lot of selling points - mystery, romance, emotions and current events. Readers should be able to enjoy it on many levels.
