This is definitely a fun read. The humour is great and there’s also some very good journalistic points. However, the history is very much incomplete. The part dedicated to proto-metal and its beginnings is completely Brit-centric, ignoring what was happening on the side of the ocean. It’s great that it mentions bands like The Who and Cream, not so great that Blue Cheer and Mountain are considered not worth of any importance. While the NWOBHM was raging, there were bands in the States that were carrying the underground flag of US Metal: what about Mark Reale’s Riot, for instance? Fire Down Under is as seminal as any Saxon record. How could the author forgot to mention Accept, who basically kickstarted the huge German power metal scene? And Queensrÿche, the forefathers of the whole prog metal movement, movement which is basically completely ignored? Some of the authors opinions I agree with, some I really don’t, but that’s perfectly fine and I have no issues with.Anyway, despite the problems I mentioned, I still consider this book worth its money, hilarious to read and definitely recommended! Just keep in mind that it’s far from being a complete history of heavy metal (which, I agree, would have been an impossible mission).

Definitely a fan's history of metal. Lots of great one liners. Enjoyable if you are a metal fan and want a fun, easy read. The only bummer are the numerous times he uses incorrect names of band members! It's "Ian" Hill. And "Gary" Holt. For someone so passionate about metal, he certainly could have used a fact checker/editor to review this!!! Nonetheless, it's a fun read at a great price.

The best, funniest, most wide ranging and readable metal history I’ve come across. An absolute pleasure. Couldn’t recommend it more.

I’ve always been a huge heavy metal fan, even going as far back as I can remember, a very young child, so I was eager to read this book as it seemed right up my street. I started the book not long after finishing Bruce Dickinson’s autobiography, but the two books couldn’t be more different. The book covers lots of subject areas within heavy metal as well as other extreme metal music – These did seem to dominate over your norm, well known heavy metal. There were even a few groups mentioned that I’d never heard of before. However, Andrew O’Neill’s voice comes across strong and makes these areas as interesting as all the others. If you are a big metal fan this book will be of interest to you. It can be heavy going at times and a few sections I found myself flicking through rather than reading, but overall it was informative and I certainly learned a lot.I also have to agree with the author that the 1990s saw the demise of heavy metal and although some groups are still going (or making a come back) there doesn’t seem to be that much interest amongst the youngsters nor the radio stations these days.If you have no interest or only a passing interest in heavy metal I can’t see this book catching your attention for long and so I would pass it by. This is for major fans only.Book reviewed on Whispering Stories Blog*I received a free copy of this book, which I voluntarily reviewed

It jolted me like a lightning bolt learning that Andrew O'Neill, the comedian whose show at Reading Festival in 2015 changed my view on metal, had created a book to accompany the show. In it O'Neill traces heavy metal's roots from rock-bashing cavemen to Ozzy Osbourne's ironic television programme. An apparent traditionalist, Andrew uses history to illustrate and ultimately attempt to draw a line in the sand between what is and is not metal, with a plethora of jokes and historiography in between. A difficult tast, one that many have tried. The difference? Andrew O'Neill is not a historian or an academic... he's a fan. And that is what breathes life into this brilliant read. It's like a conversation between one metalhead and another (the reader). Best book on metal penned thusfar. Well done!
